My Consulting Business

I've been consulting since I left TomTom in late 2011, mostly in the areas of telematics technology related to automotive, with a heavy emphasis on connected vehicles and the collection and use of vehicle data for safety and insurance applications.  I have extensive experience with maps and map vendors, such as TomTom, Nokia Here, and Open Street Map, as well as standards and requirements for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Automated Driving.  I have been at the forefront of map technology and automotive applications since the inception of vehicle connectivity- always as a thought leader and several times as a prime instigator.


I also have experience with the infrastructure and communications needs off of the vehicle.  I introduced the vehicle OEMs and NHTSA to DSRC in 1999 and created the first industry project on short range communications- which has led to over $1B in investment in interim, and I expect a mandate for the technology soon. I have helped several companies take advantage of this opportunity through technical and business advice and advocacy. My most recent company, Vehicle Data Science, focused on building big data analytics tools for processing automated vehicle data, and is an industry leader in probe-based mapping for ADAS and automated systems.  I hold several patents in this area, with more pending.


I have won 2 SBIR phase 1 grants (NSF and DOT), and one phase 2.  I have also raised research money from OEMs and government sources.

Start-ups

I have worked on three of my own startups- all advancing vehicle connectivity and promoting safety and efficiency. I help other startups to understand the automotive industry and the players as customers.   I am very successful at tailoring technology and finding the connections to existing customers and vehicle programs.  I enjoy working with small companies as their technology morphs to support one of the largest of global industries.

Information Access - Probe based traffic data collection and dissemination (an early, but not as successful WAZE or Inrix).

TerraSonance - Developing connected consumer apps for drivers that support advertising models- a cross between Flikr, podcasting and a bit of AdWords thrown in.

Vehicle Data Science - Probe based mapping.  The mapping world is bifurcating into maps for drivers and maps for cars.  Existing suppliers have done a great job of supporting drivers, but the needs of vehicles are very different. I made maps for robots, with quantitative accuracy.
